"The War of the Worlds was the first science fiction story to treat extraterrestrial aliens realistically." - Isaac Asimov 1974 AD "The daring conception upon which this story hinges is not a mere bit of invention. The War of the Worlds is, as Mr. Wells has himself said of it, "the story of possibility, a piece of realism." Whether or not we agree with the author as to this, there is no denying the strange air of reality with which he has contrived to invest this astonishing narrative of the invasion of Earth by the inhabitants of Mars. It is a wonder story for "grown-ups," and one of the deepest interest and most fascinating style. It shows, more than anything, how helpless man's most formidable engines of war become when matched against forces of which we have had no previous knowledge." - Harpers Brothers 1898 AD Average Rating:

Once we realize the significant of the situation (or think we do) Different people approach the situation in different ways. The true story is how the different people meet the situation. The story is written in the first person, which only adds to the horrifying effect of the unfolding plot. We join the narrator as he leaves the comforts of his English home near Horsell Common to see what the commotion is over yonder, where a strange cylindrical object has fallen from the sky. We recoil in horror as he sees the ... Read More Rating: - A must read sci fi classicReviewing War of the Worlds is ultimately futile in the same way reviewing any other classic by H.G. Wells is ultimately futile. Like critiquing Michelangelos David or a Bach concerto, nothing can compare with actually experiencing the work. In this case experiencing the work means delving back over a hundred years to Wells own time when he depicts a very realistic seeming story of an invasion by unfriendly Martians. At the time, positing such an invasion would have ... Read More Rating: - The invasion of the killer Martians!A great read. The War of the Worlds is a fantastic classic book, and a must read for any SF buff. HG Wells was a remarkable story teller, and he described the Martians and the soldiers who fought them with great detail. Alvim Correa's illustration are impressive, making this edition well worth the purchase. The War of the Worlds (AD Classic) Buy superhero comic book collectibles at the Superhero Mall! |
